Midlife Career Change

Sep 27, 2024

Leaving a job you love!

A midlife career change is not where we start. When Lisa started out her career in banking it quickly became a role she loved. This was her forever job! And so, for 15 years Lisa worked as a legal secretary in the fast-paced world of banking and finance for a top tier law firm. Then her life changed. Becoming a mother to her boys, just 14months apart, flipped her world upside down. A traumatic birth followed by a cerebral palsy & Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis had Lisa questioning her priorities. And, like many parents in midlife, she decided to leave her beloved career to focus on her family’s needs.

Lisa’s Career Change Story

Life became a balancing act of therapy sessions, doctor visits, hospital stays, and managing part-time jobs. One of these jobs was in a prenatal and postnatal fitness business. It was here that I saw how much women need support in their prenatal and post-baby recovery. It pained me to push patriarchal sales pitches onto mums. These women really needed guidance and compassion, not pressure. I wanted to do more for them. Consequently, in 2016, I took a leap of faith and completed my Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness.

Life was a muddled mess as I juggled everything. Between all the jobs and appointments I was also in the thick of raising my two little boys which was chaotic in itself.

People say, When you have children everything changes, but maybe things are awakened that were already there. – Meryl Streep

Being a Mum of 2, one with special needs and now as a Fitness Coach, my underlying passion came to full fruition. My passion for fitness, helping others and community connection came together at last.

Changing Careers – working with MumSafe

I joined the MumSafe team in 2021. This was the final piece of the puzzle. I knew firsthand the struggles women face when balancing motherhood, recovery, and self-care. My goal became crystal clear – no mum should feel lost or unsupported in this journey. I’ve since worked with 1000s of clients, in big franchise gyms to my own boutique company. I’ve had young women struggling with incontinence to grandmothers regaining strength, all while creating a community that supports women through every stage of motherhood.

Next Steps for Lisa

Now, I’m on a mission to raise the standard of care for prenatal and postnatal mums. Along with the MumSafe Team I am driven to make sure that no woman ever says, “Why didn’t anyone tell me this?”

It’s never too late for a career change, and if you’re passionate about helping other mums, this could be your next chapter too. I made this career change at 38 years old.

My legacy is to raise the standard and level of care our prenatal and postnatal mums and women receive in our community and beyond and to have a generational impact on their children to come.

I have a quote in my office which says ‘Do what makes your soul happy’ and I think I’ve found it – this is now my dream job!

Career moments that make my soul happy

Over the past 8 years, I have been blessed to be able to provide guidance, support and encouragement for many clients. A few memorable moments that stand out:

  • Young, 20 year old client, leaking on running / high intensity. I advised her to see a women’s health physiotherapist (the retort was ‘But I haven’t had a baby’). She was subsequently diagnosed with stress incontinence.
  • Older 63 years client, recovery post hip surgery. Presented with drop foot, balance and stability issues. We built strength, courage and endurance returning her to star jumps, and lifting. Now she is able to look after her twin grandkids. She is now pushing prams and knows she can get up and down off the floor with them.
  • 45 year old client recovering from hysterectomy. Alongside a women’s health physio we worked through rehab phases before loading with weights.
  • 40 year old 2nd time Mum. Rebuilt strength and endurance throughout her pregnancy (her first being preemie) to a stronger, fitter pregnancy with reduced niggles and aches to manage a toddler and pregnancy with a safe, educated delivery at 38 weeks.
  • Creating a safe and nurturing environment for all. They know they always enter into a safe space with me.
